Seasonal Dry Shampoo OEM: What a Fragrance Change Needs to Pass
Plan a seasonal dry shampoo OEM fragrance variant with a defined change record, formula and pack checks, performance comparison and release criteria.

A seasonal dry-shampoo fragrance change needs a documented review of the formula, pack, stability, delivered dose and performance. Use the approved original as the comparison, identify the evidence affected by the change and release the variant only when its own acceptance criteria are met.
The current commercial signal
Living Proof announced a Frosted Fig limited-edition dry shampoo on 1 October 2026 (brand release, reviewed 3 October). That is evidence of a seasonal fragrance strategy by one brand. It does not establish that every dry-shampoo base can accept a new scent without further work.
Buyer inference: scent extensions may offer a focused launch concept. Their feasibility depends on the changed formula, pack, manufacturing route and commercial volume.
Start with a change record
Ask the developer to list what changes: fragrance identity, concentration, carrier, solubilization or dispersing approach, color, pack materials and artwork. Record which other formula adjustments are needed to achieve the desired scent.
“Same base” is not a sufficient approval statement if supporting ingredients or use instructions also change. Keep a retained sample and the final specification of the original version.
Establish the applicable format
A powder pump, a liquid non-aerosol mist and an aerosol system require different delivery and compatibility assessments. Do not approve an aerosol variant using only a liquid-mist check. Confirm specialist filling and packaging capability where required.
Build a variant-specific review
| Area | Compare with the original | Required decision |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance and distribution | Color, uniformity, sediment or powder behavior | Is the variant within its specification? |
| Scent over storage | Character and intensity at agreed intervals | Is the fragrance acceptable through the assessed period? |
| Delivery | Dose, spray or powder pattern, clogging | Do labeled instructions deliver the tested amount? |
| Pack contact | Leakage, component changes and closure performance | Does the final pack remain fit for use? |
| Hair performance | Oil-refresh appearance, residue and hair feel | Does the proposed benefit remain supported? |
The table is a proposed purchasing checklist. The responsible formulator and laboratory should set test conditions, sampling and release limits for the specific system.
Review evidence rather than copying claims
If the original label uses a quantified claim, ask whether the variant is covered by the evidence and why. The answer may require targeted bridging work or a new study. A competitor's percentage, duration or “invisible” claim cannot be used for your variant.
Fragrance documentation and artwork should reflect the actual version and destination market. Treat scent identity, stability and performance as separate approval questions.
Decide whether a seasonal SKU is commercially ready
Request the minimum fill quantity per scent, pack procurement commitment, variant artwork costs and expected lead time for the quoted route. Separate stock-pack options from custom components. Do not assume a general low-MOQ website statement applies to an aerosol or bespoke fragrance project.
Plan how the seasonal stock will be replenished or retired. A product can be technically acceptable and still create excessive inventory risk.
FAQ
Can an approved base skip all testing after a scent change?
No. Review the specific changes and justify the evidence that remains applicable.
Must every variant repeat every original study?
Not necessarily. The responsible team should define and justify a proportionate validation plan.
What should accompany the final approval sample?
The final formula/version reference, pack specification, test status, accepted claim wording and release criteria.
