Salon Shampoo OEM: Choosing Retail and Backbar Sizes Without Doubling Inventory
Compare retail and backbar shampoo formats, formula approval, pack testing and minimum quantities before planning a salon OEM order.

Salon buyers can reduce inventory risk by evaluating one shampoo formula in retail and backbar packs before approving separate variants. Confirm the minimum order and packaging for each size: one shared formula does not automatically mean one combined MOQ.
Define the salon and retail jobs
A backbar shampoo must dispense conveniently at the wash basin and provide a consistent cleansing and rinse experience across stylists. A retail bottle must fit the customer’s home routine, shelf space and price point. Identify the hair type, cleansing intensity, scent and desired finish before asking for samples.
Compare a shared formula with separate formulas
A shared approved formula can simplify sensory review and inventory planning, but the commercial case depends on whether both channels need the same result. A salon may prioritize quick distribution and rinse at the basin while retail users may prefer different directions or scent intensity. Request two samples when the jobs differ; avoid introducing a second formula solely for a different bottle.
Test each pack as a separate system
Compare the pump or closure with the actual shampoo viscosity. Record dose per pump, leakage, label legibility and handling with wet hands. Ask for compatibility and stability checks on each intended bottle and closure. A satisfactory small pack does not prove the larger pack will perform identically.
Plan inventory and quote scope
Request the formula price and the minimum quantity per size, closure, label and carton. For selected mature formulas with qualified stock packaging, orders may start at 100 pieces; packaging changes generally start at 500 pieces, subject to the process. Professional formulas and larger custom packs may have different minimums. Compare total landed cost, shelf space and expected reorder rates before committing.
Set acceptance criteria before production
Agree the sample reference, cleansing feel, fragrance, viscosity range and pack specification in writing. If the project needs a hard-water or other performance claim, ask what finished-product evidence supports it; do not infer test results from the ingredient list.
Frequently asked questions
Can both sizes share a 100-piece MOQ? Not necessarily. Each exact formula and pack must qualify, and separate size or component minimums may apply.
Should the backbar pack use the same pump? Only if testing confirms dispensing and fit for that pack.
Can I request samples before a full order? Discuss sample availability and the target market with the manufacturer before approval.
